Organization Structure

The Chicago Biomedical Consortium began in early 2002 with support from a planning grant from The Searle Funds at The Chicago Community Trust. Over the ensuing years, the CBC has been a forum for discussion among scientists from UIC, UChicago (including colleagues based at Argonne National Laboratory), and Northwestern, with occasional contributions from scientists at other area institutions. Several years of ongoing conversations and active collaboration have strengthened enthusiasm among research scientists and administrative leaders and shaped a common resolve to make the CBC successful. Those involved with the CBC share the vision of transforming biomedical research and education in Chicago into an exceptional collaborative enterprise.

To provide institutional responsibility and oversight, the Provost at each CBC institution oversee the CBC effort. Periodically and as necessary these officials, or their designees, meet together to review the activities of the CBC and the efforts of their institutions in supporting the CBC mission.

External Advisory Board. The External Advisory Board is composed of three distinguished external scientists, representatives of the Searle family, and a representative of the Chicago Community Trust and provide general direction, advice and counsel to the CBC Leadership.

Scientific Review Board. A Scientific Review Board, composed of three scientists from each institution, assess and recommend CBC programmatic plans quarterly.

Scientific Boards. The CBC Leadership have appointed three subsidiary scientific boards to manage specific projects.

  • Proteomics/Informatics Scientific Review Board
  • Recruitment Resources Board
  • Spark Board

Each Scientific Board is composed of equal numbers of scientists from consortium institutions who serve on a volunteer basis. The boards report to the CBC Leadership, and work closely with the Executive Director to define and implement the specifics of the particular project.
