Workshop Recap

January 25, 2013

The CBC Ovarian Cancer Workshop, supported by the recently-launched CBC Exploratory Workshop Program, took place at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Pharmacy on January 12, 2013. The workshop was attended by over 30 people, including graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, faculty members and staff from the three CBC universities. Members of Gilda’s Club Chicago and the Bears Care organization also participated.

The workshop was organized by Dr. William T. Beck, Professor and Head of the Department of Biopharmaceutical Sciences at UIC, Dr. Julian C. Schink, Professor and Chief of Gynecologic Oncology at the Feinberg School of Medicine and Lurie Cancer Center at Northwestern University, and Dr. Ernst Lengyel, Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Chicago. The goal of the day-long workshop was to initiate the development of a Chicago-based ovarian cancer consortium that would attempt to identify the most pressing scientific questions in both ovarian cancer biology and treatment. Once identified, these questions could be addressed by joint grant applications. Dr. Gini Fleming from the University of Chicago and Dr. Julian Schink from Northwestern began the meeting with talks on the current state and future directions of clinical care and trials. Dr. Lynne Wagner from Northwestern and LauraJane Hyde, Executive Director of Gilda’s Club Chicago, discussed new developments in psychosocial interventions and survivorship. The morning concluded with presentations by Dr. Ernst Lengyel from University of Chicago, Dr. Marcus Peter from Northwestern University and Dr. Maria Barbolina from UIC about the current state and future directions of basic and translational science in the diagnostics and management of ovarian cancer. Following lunch and a poster session, the workshop participants were divided into small discussion groups to brainstorm ideas on developing a research proposal using the morning discussions as a focal point. The workshop concluded with a summary of recommendations and strategies on how to move forward.
