Five Student Awards made to the CBC members to attend the 2018 Drug Safety Gordon Research Conference
Congratulations to the five CBC community members who received Student Awards to attend the 2018 Drug Safety Gordon Research Conference (GRC), to be held in Easton, MA, June 10-15. The GRC have a longstanding tradition of supporting leading edge science in a highly collegial and inclusive environment and the Drug Safety Conference is a strong example of this. 2018 Conference topics will include systems and computational toxicology, microphysiological systems, immune modulation in clinical development and big data approach to adverse event detection. The event represents an ideal opportunity for those interested in enhancing their understanding of contemporary Safety Assessment in drug discovery/development and also aligns well with the CBC Phase 2 mission of facilitating biomedical research with translational potential.
Jim Stevens, Chair of the 2018 Drug Safety GRC approached the CBC in late April with a unique opportunity to increase the options for young academic scientists in the Chicago area to benefit from this experience. Jim offered an invitation for researchers from CBC institutions to apply for the Student Awards. These awards cover all costs (registration, room and board) for the GRC meeting except travel. The students/trainees who receive awards must present a poster and stay for the entire meeting.
As part of the application process, the submitted poster abstracts were evaluated by the GRC committee and the Awards were announced yesterday, May 13. A total of five individuals, representing each of the CBC institutions, were chosen as the Student Award winners:
- Misuk Bae, UIC
- Lauren Gutgesell, UIC
- Irawati (Angki) Kandela, Northwestern
- Judy Prasad*, University of Chicago
- Gianina Varea*, University of Chicago
——
*A joint award to two presenters of the same poster.
In addition to the conference, Gordon Research Seminar (GRS), will be held June 9-10 at the same site. For an additional cost ($275) awarded students/trainees are encouraged to participate in the GRS the weekend prior to the conference.
The CBC is proud to be taking on a new role to provide local and nation-wide opportunities to researchers in our community and again thanks Jim Stevens and the 2018 Drug Safety GRC Organizing Committee for this tremendous experience for our scientists.
