Workshop Recap

May 28, 2013

Eleven researchers from the three CBC institutions convened on May 15, 2013 at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Molecular Biology Research Building for the fourth CBC Exploratory Workshop titled “Lipoproteins.” Several post-doctoral fellows and graduate students from the participating research groups were also in attendance. The lively and informative half-day event was co-organized by Dr. Ronald Dubreuil, Associate Professor in Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology, UIC and Dr. Catherine Reardon, Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology, The University of Chicago (UChicago).

The workshop started off with Dr. Godfrey Getz (UChicago) providing a summary of emerging mechanisms that account for the effects of macrophage cholesterol homeostasis on atherogenesis. The session proceeded with short presentations given by Drs. Ron Dubreuil, Mary Jo LaDu, Leon Tai and Irena Levitan (UIC), Mark Johnson and Ed Thorp (Northwestern University) and Timothy Sontag (UChicago) who introduced their lipoprotein-related research and provided insight into the different methodologies used in each laboratory.  Drs. Jayme Borensztajn (NU) and Papasani V. Subbaiah (UIC) participated as advisors.

Animated discussions ensued centering on fostering future collaborations among the workshop participants based on shared interests and complementary approaches used to study lipoproteins. The meeting concluded with the recommendation to host a symposium in Chicago that would broadly encompass the field of lipoprotein research and feature key speakers from the city and beyond. The group unanimously agreed that such a symposium would serve to promote local interest in this research area and would also attract national attention to the ongoing lipoprotein research in the city of Chicago.  A committee was formed to develop a proposal for this event.
